Bio
Overview
Hi, my name is Ryan Riegner. I am a Graphic Designer living and working in New York City. On this website you will find my persona portfolio and blog. The content on this website is very open and I highly encourage good discussion, so please share you thoughts, experience and experiments on the blog, as I would love to have your feedback become part of the overall post dialogue. Feel free to look around, have fun, and add to the conversation!
Background
I was born in 1988 in Erie, a small blimp on the radar in Northwestern Pennsylvania. I spent most of my early childhood creating fortified Lego monstrosities, creating movies on a VCR camcorder, and furiously doodling in acid-free sketchbooks. I was blessed with some great childhood friends, and we spent most of our time creatively makings things, whether it was constructing an operating medieval trebuchet, or creating functioning tobacco pipes out of bamboo.
Education
When I entered High School, I spent most of my free time within the Commercial Art program, learning all that I could from my good friend, instructor, and mentor, Dennis O’laughlin. I applied and was accepted to Parsons School of Design, and was awarded a full tuition scholarship, of which multiple newspapers interviewed me and wrote a front page cover story about the event. After two years of study at Parsons, I spent a semester abroad, studying Graphic Design at RMIT in Melbourne Australia. The experience was invaluable in that I gained a wealth of knowledge and experience about Design within another culture. Afterwords, I returned to Parsons in November of 2009, and am currently enjoying the Communication Design program, as I plan to graduate in 2011.
Work Experience
After a series of internships at SPIN Magazine and Zago LLC, I co-founded Albino Rhino Design with good friend and business partner, Alex Levin. The multi-disciplinary studio, as well as occasional freelance work has kept me busy for the time being. On the interweb, my work has been featured on numerous design websites, including Notcot, LogoPond, FormFiftyFive, and ilovetypograhy; and has been published in The Typed Image by Barbara Brownie. I am currently for hire as a freelance designer, and any inquiry or quote can be sent to me via the contact page.
T Shaped Personality
Apart from my skills as a designer I also have a rather off roster of diverse experiences and interests. I find the importance of immersion in other aspects of life outside of design to be crucial to the design process. I am fascinated by learning, and have effectively involved myself in: Mandarin Studies, Muse Automation, Semester Lecture classes at Yale, self-taught guitar lessons, avid rock climbing/bouldering, amateur beat-boxing, and break dancing just to name a few. These multiple learning curves have not only helped me enjoy life more fully, but have immensely improved my range of design expertise in ways that I had never thought possible.
