SKETCHBOOK

MIXED MEDIA

I recently began composing a sketchbook to explore some different materials and compositional possibilities of illustration. Below are just a selected few spreads from my experiments. All contain a sort of agenda or goal of a process that I was attempting to understand more fully. For example, the second 2nd and 3rd spreads were a study that I composed at the Natural History Museum In New York City. I reconstructed creatures based upon selected parts of different animals of the museum exhibits. I did this to better understand differences in texture and evolutional construction and how those principals can be reapplied to physical beauty rather than genetic perfection. Be on the lookout for more inserts.

SELF PORTRAITS

DIGITAL PAINTING

Both of these self portraits were an introduction for me to Corel Painter and the ominous Wacom Tablet. The first displays me giving my stress (represented by specific imagery placed around me) up to God (which is represented by the light). This was made in a time in which christianity was a prime factor in my life, and this image is a great reflection of that. The second was a focus on understanding the compositional backings of the construction of the human face. I really like the mix of texture blending and rough strokes. Call it a happy accident.

STIPPLE

STIPPLE

Probably one of the most time consuming projects that I've ever embarked on, this stipple construction was a joint project with three other artists. An original photo of the four of us was taken and split into sections, and each of us completed a stipple illustration of another part of the image, so that at the end the pieces were placed back together and remade the original image with four different styles. This was my addition to the collective project. That's my hair to the right.
