New Philippines Currency

Designer, Artist, Craftsman

Paper currency, regardless of it’s technical beauty, elegant craftsmanship and saturation into everyday life, it is one of the most commonly overlooked aspects of remarkable design… so I chose to redesign some. I decided to go with the Philippine peso, as I will be traveling to Australia and Southeast Asia this winter. I chose to focus primarily on applying governmental requirements, specific imagery, color, and form relative to the Philippines that showcased both internal and external associations with this island nation, and I am more than pleased with the result. I plan to distribute them to locals, possibly as trade if and when I arrive.

@ Lance – Thanks for the interest, it’s great to get acceptance of the designs from a native. Currently these are not in production, but if enough interest were to build up I would consider making an edition. I’ve been thinking of making large posters of currency sheets or wads of cash within a “government” case.

And I just realized the mistake on the prints, minute but very important. I’ll be sure to correct it if and when they ever make it to the printer!

i’d just like to point out that “sandaang libong piso” on the TANDANG SORA note is actually PhP 100,000.00 and not PhP 100.00 :)

one hundred would be “isang daan”, or in this case “isang daang piso”. cheers!

A few corrections need to be made (daan(g) = x100, libo(ng) = x1000), but I really dig the mix of colors here (especially on the 2000-peso bill). The weave is a nice touch, too; very filipino.

How might we possibly get our hands on a print of those? I can already imagine a framed sheet hanging on my wall. ;)

@ Brownspank – Thanks for the corrections on the bills. Needless to say I didn’t put enough research into the specifics of the type on the current Phillipines notes. But I plan to make the changes as soon as possible to eliminate any and all confusion.

As of the moment I don’t have any system set up for sending out prints. But if you’d like, contact me via email and I believe we could work something out!

The Philippine central bank is currently in the process of redesigning all our banknotes. Your post is very timely as this will serve as a challenge to our own banknote designers.

I hope you won’t mind but what are those designs you placed at the reverse? 100-mangoes? 500-anahaw leaves? 2000-orchids? Interesting!

@ Grant – I wish they would approve them, it would be marvelous to see them in circulation.

As of the moment I am not producing prints of the bills, although I appreciate the offer. If there ever is enough demand for them, I’ll be sure to consider producing a run. I’ll keep you updating on this, and keep collecting! It’s be great to see a relation to the World’s currencies all right next to each other! It would be a powerful image.

Amazing! so beautiful. I am a graphic brazilian graphic design, in Portugal for the last 22 years. I’ve been always interested in currency design because of the detailed intricate patterns.
